UO Imbuing Skill Guide

Hard
crafting

Imbuing allows you to add magical properties to items, making it one of the most powerful crafting skills in Ultima Online. It was introduced with the Stygian Abyss expansion and is required for high-end custom gear builds.

Overview

Imbuing is the Mondain's Legacy crafting skill that lets you add or strengthen magical properties on items at a Soulforge. Working from a small pool of imbuing ingredients plus gems and resources, an imbuer can build an item's properties up toward its intensity cap, tailoring gear to a specific template. Imbuing is one of the most powerful ways to create custom equipment in Ultima Online, and it pairs closely with Unraveling, which breaks down magic items back into imbuing ingredients.

Skill Bonuses

Key mechanics that govern what you can imbue:

  • Higher Imbuing skill lets you apply higher property intensities; reaching the maximum on top-tier properties generally requires Grandmaster or higher skill.
  • Every item has a total intensity budget (a weight cap) shared across all of its properties, so boosting one property leaves less room for others.
  • Imbuing must be performed at a Soulforge; forges in special locations can provide a success bonus.
  • Each property has its own weight, and heavier, more valuable properties consume more of the item's budget and require rarer ingredients.
Advanced Notes

Imbuing draws on three core ingredients, which are obtained mainly by unraveling magic items. Which ingredient a property needs depends on how powerful that property is:

IngredientTypical Use
Magical ResidueFuels lower-tier and lower-intensity properties; the most common imbuing currency.
Enchanted EssenceRequired for mid-range properties and higher intensities.
Relic FragmentNeeded for the strongest, highest-intensity properties.

In addition to these residues, most properties also call for specific gems, crafting resources or special ingredients, with the quantity rising as the intensity you are imbuing increases.
